An elegant take on a gentlemen's gaming room, this bowling alley in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel has the two antique, reclaimed bowling alleys and a $75 cocktail on the menu to prove it. Since then others have opened, including The Spare Room, which opened in Los Angeles in 2011. And the trend went indie in 2009, when Brooklyn Bowl opened its upscale bowling alley/bar/restaurant/music venue in Williamsburg and Tim League of Alamo Drafthouse fame opened the Highball in Austin, Texas - what he calls a a "fun center," with bowling, karoake, parties, a bar and a restaurant. In 2003, the first locations of the chains Splittsville and Lucky Strike both opened, in Tampa, Florida and Hollywood, respectively. In 2010, a tricked out new location opened in the old New York Times building, complete with a David Burke restaurant, two nightclubs, a ballroom and, of course, 50 lanes of bowling. One of the first was Bowlmor: the current incarnation of the New York City bowling alley opened in 1994 and, according to the Bowlmor website, by 1999 it was the highest grossing bowling alley in the country. These are not bowling alleys as you currently know them. They're chic lounges with antique wooden alleys or state of the art equipment where you can order fancy pre-Prohibition-inspired cocktails and food from a chef whose name is on the menu. But what about the current generation of bowling alleys?īowling alleys today run the gamut from suburban chains aimed at young professionals with "evening casual" dress codes to hip urban bowling alley/event venue combos with extensive local beer lists to antique, reclaimed lanes accompanied by a bartender in a vest with a handlebar moustache. Bowling usually brings to mind dark, smoke-stained, wood-paneled lairs that haven't been remodeled since the 70s, or, worse, mid-90s black-lit strips in the suburbs with cartoon bowling pins dancing on the televisions.

During their travels he shares the “secrets of his soul” with Bobby. “Me And Bobby McGee” is a song about Bobby McGee and her companion as they travel from Louisiana to Kentucky to California. In Joplin’s version Bobby is a male, while in the original lyric Kristofferson wrote Bobby is a female. He didn’t know she’d recorded it until after she died. Joplin had heard the song when Kristofferson sang it for her. Her version of “Me And Bobby McGee” peaked for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1971. After Janis Joplin died on October 4, 1970, her album, Pearl, was released the following January. Others have recorded the song including Kristofferson, Thelma Houston, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Pride. His recording climbed to #12 on the Billboard Country charts that year. In June 1969 Miller’s cover of the song made the Top Ten in selected radio markets in Florida, Kentucky, Indiana and California. It was first released as a single by Roger Miller. “Me And Bobby McGee” is a song written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster. Lightfoot had a number of album and 45 RPM single successes in Canada in the late 60’s and early 70’s, including “ Bitter Green” and his cover of Kris Kristopherson’s “ Me And Bobby McGee”. In 1966 he was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to compose the “ Canadian Railroad Trilogy” for a broadcast on New Year’s Day in 1967, the nations centennial. The attention Lightfoot got as a songwriter landed him a record contract with United Artists in 1965. These included “Early Morning Rain” by both the Kingston Trio and Judy Collins, and “Ribbon of Darkness” by Marty Robbins. At that time, Lightfoot’s songs were recorded by numerous recording acts. He got work as a performer on the CBC’s Country Hoedown and went to England to host the BBC TV Country and Western Show in 1963-64. In the years that followed Lightfoot performed in coffee houses in Toronto. During his teen years Gordon Lightfoot learned to play piano, drums and guitar. Lightfoot went on to perform at Toronto’s Massey Hall at the age of twelve when he won a competition for boys who were still boy sopranos. Paul’s United Church choir in Orillia, Lightfoot gained skill and needed confidence in his vocal abilities under the choir director, Ray Williams. He sang the Irish lullaby “Too Ra Loo Rah Loo Rah” at a parents’ day. His mother noticed young Gordon had some musical talent and the boy soprano first performed in grade four at his elementary school. His parents, Jessica and Gordon Lightfoot Sr., ran a dry cleaning business. was born in Orillia, Ontario, on November 17, 1938. Peak Position on Billboard Hot 100 ~ did not chart I was hoping it would be released in other environments, for example as a download from Amazon, but that hasn't happened, so I decided to just let you all know that it is on iTunes.#893: Me And Bobby McGee by Gordon Lightfoot It was always one of my favorite tracks on that amazing album.Īs I said at the start, this is only available on iTunes. Lightfoot's version of "Me and Bobby McGee" is on his first Warner Brothers album, If You Could Read My Mind. Hawkins, Kristofferson and Lightfoot laid down their vocal tracks at Hawkins' home, surrounded by close friends who joined in the final chorus Nelson was recorded later in his tour bus. Obviously, iTunes is easy for everybody else, but not for me. It took me only about an hour to figure out how to buy this thing and then play it. Thankfully, I have an iPad, which I use only for testing websites. After 3 weeks of wondering, and watching the video trailer which has only Kris and Ronnie, I decided to take the plunge. I have never used iTunes (I download from Amazon or Google), and I don't have iTunes on my PC. This wonderful video was released in Augit is available only at iTunes, and only as a video. Some quick notes about the purpose of the series, and making the most of the anti-bullying message: To that end, we've put together educational handouts for each of the Shredderman books. They are cross-curricular and fun! The pages are printer-friendly, keeping in mind your copying budgets, and I think you’ll find that there’s something for everyone. Teaching is at times exhilarating but it is also exhausting, which is why it’s important for us to help each other out. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.I was a classroom teacher for 15 years so I know how hard it is to find time to explore educational avenues outside mandated curriculum requirements. It's not fair, but at least I'm still alive. So I just eat lunch far away from him, make room when he's cutting in line, and let him call me Nerd. I'm half Bubba's size and don't exactly want to die in elementary school. He breathes putrid fumes in your face.Īnd even though I've always wanted to do something about it, I could never figure out what. He doesn't have a gap between his front teeth anymore, but Bubba called him that in second grade, and he hasn't been Brian since. Even the teachers call him Gap because he wants them to. If Bubba calls you something a few times, you'll hear it over and over again from everyone. everyone's got two names: one from their parents and one from Bubba. Todd is Toad, Ian is Fizz, Jenni is Worm-lips, Trinity is Pony-girl, Kayla is Freckle, Sarah is Kiss-up. The only thing Bubba's ever given anyone is names. Actually, I think he steals from them the most. And probably my favorite The Gecko and Sticky magazine and the Dinosaurs library book I keep getting a reminder on. My magic-rub eraser is in Bubba's desk right now with the initials B.B. Green's already got one full-time job teaching fifth grade, and my mom says it's hard for him to take on another in the middle of it. Green, tries to keep Bubba in line, but Mr. School without Bubba would be a whole new place. Line up for class without him taking cuts and shoving the rest of us back. Play four-square without him hogging the ball. I could eat lunch without him flipping over my tray. what if I could fire Bubba from school? Wouldn't that be cool? Just kick him out and tell him to never come back. And second, I wouldn't hire Bubba in a million years. He says that I've got a lot more on the ball than Bubba does, and that one day Alvin Bixby will be working for me.īut he's wrong on two counts. Now that I'm a fifth grader, my dad tells me not to worry about Bubba. She says that kids like Bubba help us get ready for life. My mom and dad used to try to get the school to do something about Bubba. Now it's "Sure, Bubba" and "You betcha, Bubba" whenever he talks to him. Mike McDermish got dared to do it once and was nothing but Mike-mush when it was over. I've told him that calling him Alvin will get me pounded. He thinks I should call him Alvin, which is his real name. My father thinks I shouldn't call Bubba "Bubba" like everyone else does. We had to slap his cheeks like crazy to get him to wake up, and when he did, he sat up, then threw up. When Bubba shouted at him, Ian's eyes rolled up in his head. It actually happened to him in the third grade. Teachers are always telling him to use words instead of fists-they have no idea what they're saying! Bubba-breath can knock you out cold.Īsk Ian McCoy. What I do know is that Bubba Bixby's got rocky knuckles. My dad says a boy isn't born bad-he grows into being bad. Bubba Bixby was born big and mean, full of teeth and ready to bite. 1% Stock-Back® rewards are subject to terms and conditions. This usually sends the cloud niner into a shocked state. When the cloud niner awakes, they have little knowledge of anything around them and dont remember who the people are around them, no matter how good of friends they are with the people surrounding them. After this, the cloud niner should pass out for a few seconds and then awake. A second person must then immediately cut off all blood and oxygen going to the brain, by placing their hands over the cloud niners throat, as if they were choking the cloud niner. After that, they once again go back against the wall with their breath held. After hypervetilating, they suck in all air and hold their breath. After that, they must hyperventilate for 1 to 2 minutes. First, the person who is going to be cloud nined must flatten against a wall, and then bend over. A Cloud Nine is an easy way to be launched into a high euphoria. The losses in these battles were certainly more significant for the Germans than at the Battle of Brody. The Soviet forces involved here were larger than the forces involved in the original defensive effort, with the Voronezh Front now consisting of eight armies, the Steppe Front consisting of three armies, and there being one army contributed by the Southwestern Front to this attack. The final part of the Battle of Kursk was the counter-offensive in the south by Voronezh, Southwestern and Steppe Fronts that started on 3 August, took Kharkov and continued until 23 August. This was a major attack that added additional forces as it developed and went on until 23 August. A Soviet Front is equivalent to an army group and this attack initially consisted of five armies and included four Soviet tank corps. The third part to the Battle of Kursk began on 12 July the Western and Bryansk Fronts launched an offensive on the north side of the Orel salient. This offensive fizzled at the Battle of Ponyiri on 12 July. It consisted of the Ninth Army with five corps and six German panzer divisions. To the north was the German attack from the Orel salient that was about two-thirds the size of the attack in the south. On the other hand, it probably is not.īut, this was just one part of the Battle of Kursk. So depending on which Battle of Brody figures being used, and whether all the Soviet tanks were indeed ready-for-action and committed to the battle, then the Battle of Brody might be larger than the attack in the southern part of the Kursk salient. This includes tanks that were added during the two weeks of battle and mysterious adjustments to strength figures that we cannot otherwise explain. Our count of total committed tanks is slightly higher, 1,749 German and 2,978 Soviet. The Soviets at 4 July in the all formations that would eventually get involved has 2,775 tanks with 1,664 tanks in the Voronezh Front at the start of the battle. My tank counts for the southern attack staring 4 July 1943 was 1,707 German tanks (1,709 depending if you count the two Panthers that caught fire on the move up there). This offensive involved five German corps (including three Panzer corps consisting of nine panzer and panzer grenadier divisions) and they faced seven Soviet Armies (including two tank armies and a total of ten tank and mechanized corps). Now, is this really a larger tank battle than the Battle of Kursk? My book covers only the southern part of the German attack that started on 4 July and ended 17 July. So, total tanks involved are from 3,750 to up to 6,000, with the lower figure appearing to be more correct. Sources vary on this, and I have not taken the time to sort this out (so many battles, so little time). The German won with losses of around a 100 to 200 tanks. Only 3,000 Soviet tanks made it to the battlefield according to Glantz (see video at 16:00). This rather confused affair pitted between 750 to 1,000 German tanks against 3,500 to 5,000 Soviet tanks. This battle occurred right at the start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union and consisted of two German corps attacking five Soviet corps in what is now Ukraine. What they put forth as the largest tank battle in history is the Battle of Brody in 23-30 June 1941. Displayed across the top of my book is the phrase “Largest Tank Battle in History.” Apparently some people dispute that. |
